What is GRP roofing?

GPR is a type of fiberglass roofing which stands for Glassfibre Reinforced Plastics. This kind of roofing material has not yet been fully understood in the market, and it is also very versatile. Even though this is the case, it has a lot of potentials when it comes to different wide spectrum applications across different roofing jobs. Even though this type of material is plastic, it doesn’t display most of the disadvantages that tend to come with thermoplastics that are commonly used every single day. For example, one powerful feature about it is that it does not melt but it has been found to burn the same way as wood. However, even though this is the case, it can easily be made into a fire resistant material.

Benefits of a GRP Roof

GRP roofing is very strong; it is even seven times stronger than steel when you compare it to its flexural strength. Even with its strength this type of roofing material is very light. However, it has very high energy absorption properties which are why it is not only used as a roofing material, but it is also used in boats, racing cars, aero planes and baths.

It is however important for you to take note that GRP roofing is a product that is molded. What this means is that it needs a tool or a former in which it can be moldedto. Before the material is molded, it is usually in its simplest form known as hand-lay.

A typical GPR roof would be constructed by following the following steps.

  • The first thing that is going to be done by the roofer is to remove the already existing chipping, deck and felt. Next, the existing roof joists are going to be exposed.
  • Any poor water drainage is going to be removed or improved which is most commonly done by making use of timber firings.
  • There are going to be flashing trims, edging trims and fillets trims that are usually specifically pre molded so that they can be fixed into the right place.
  • The matting is then cut into the right size and then impregnated with a special kind of resin. The resin is put on the deck so that it can be able to form a membrane that is seamless.
  • The roof is then given a curing time after which the top coat resin is then applied to the entire roof.
  • Once the application is complete, the GRP flasing is going to be installed.
  • The GRP roof where the roof tiles meets the roof is then going to be extended. The extension is going to be done under the tile roof.
  • Once everything is complete, all the waste is removed from the working site.
